Chapter Sixteen

Cyrus would’ve dearly loved a nap when they finally got back to his workshop, but instead he was getting dressed for the non-dinner meeting with Python’s friends. It had been an energetic and fun afternoon out in the forest. Asimov had adored his bear and wolf, both of whom got to stretch their legs that afternoon.

Cyrus’s bear had mock wrestled with the friendly demon, snapping, lunging, and then rolling around on the forest floor, with Asimov chuckling in that deep, raspy tone of his. Cyrus’s wolf wasn’t a fan of fighting, but he was tail-waggingly happy, showing his new friend some of the secrets of the forest from his perspective. By the time Cyrus and Python both shifted back, the sun was starting to set, and lunch was a very distant memory.

“You’d better feed me at this meeting of yours,” Cyrus teased as Python came back into the bedroom from the bathroom. “Otherwise, my belly rumbles are going to drown out the conversation.”

“Do you fancy barbecue ribs? Or me?” Python spread his arms and did a bit of a shimmy. He was looking particularly handsome in a black suit, with a black shirt and shoes. “If you have me, you won’t get any calories.”

“I might have taken you up on that sexy offer,” Cyrus teased, coming closer and fiddling with Python’s shirt collar, not because it needed adjusting but because he liked their closeness. “However, we still have a Lexus to go and pick up in Spokane, before you zap me off to some mysterious location.”

Python groaned, which made Cyrus laugh. “I swear you love that car more than me,” he grumbled.

“I’d just hate for you to lose something precious to you,” Cyrus said.

“Which is why I’m not going to lose you.” And his demon was serious, and that sent flutters through Cyrus’s heart as Python translocated them to Spokane.

The car was parked in a dimly lit parking lot, which made sense because Python would’ve expected to have zapped back to it from his job scene, if he hadn’t been hurt. But the moment they materialized, Cyrus’s hackles rose, and he growled. The stench of wolf shifters was heavy in the air. The reason for the smell was sitting on the hood of the Lexus – two men sitting on it, four men standing around it.

“Finally,” one of the shifters said. “And we got the twofer boys, just like Ethan said. Get ‘em. Distract the demon and take out the mate. Move!”

They know we’re mated, but that was all Cyrus had time to think as the wolf shifters attacked. He felt the brush of magic in the air and realized Python had warded the area, which was sensible. It was still early evening, and while the parking lot was quiet, it wouldn’t remain that way if people were attracted to the sounds of fighting.

Cyrus couldn’t fully shift – he didn’t have clothes to shift back into, and both his wolf and bear were vying to take on the attackers.
